Online Support & Curriculum

Online Lessons

Daily online lessons are a core part of our program. These interactive sessions focus on speaking, listening, collaboration, and building positive relationships with peers and teachers. Lessons are carefully aligned with the Australian Curriculum.

In addition to class-based sessions, students may participate in one-on-one lessons with their classroom teacher or our Support Teacher  Learning. These sessions are tailored to support individual strengths and learning needs, helping each student achieve their personal goals.

We also run Morning Muster sessions each day, led by the Principal. Morning Muster is a time to connect as a school community, share news, explore general knowledge, and celebrate student achievements.

ICT and Digital Learning

To support distance learning, students use laptops and/or ipads to access online lessons, programmed activities, and virtual school events via the WebEx platform. All students are provided with a school email.

We use Connect to provide home tutors with additional learning resources, and a digital portfolio platform. Connect allows students to share work, receive feedback, and engage in an ongoing learning dialogue with teachers and families.

As part of the national Technologies curriculum, students are also learning about digital systems, data, and problem-solving skills that prepare them for a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world.

Learning Materials and Resources

Families receive a comprehensive program in the post, including student workbooks, and hands-on kits to support learning in Mathematics, Physical Education, and other curriculum areas. These resources are essential for developing practical skills and ensuring engagement across different learning styles.

To support the return of completed work and school items, we provide blue vinyl zip-up bags or Reply-Paid mailing stickers. All postage costs are covered by the school, provided families use the supplied bags or labels. If you need additional bags or stickers, please contact our office.

We ask families to return completed work promptly and avoid stockpiling materials, as this ensures resources can be circulated efficiently to all students.

Teacher Home Visits & Face-to-Face Opportunities

At Kalgoorlie School of the Air, building strong relationships is at the heart of our approach to distance education. Throughout the year, teachers travel to visit students in their home or current location if not travelling. These Teacher Home Visits are a valuable opportunity for staff to:

  • Strengthen connections with students and families
  • Understand the student’s learning environment
  • Provide hands-on support to both students and home tutors
  • Model effective teaching practices
  • Discuss student progress face-to-face with parents or guardians

In addition to home visits, students and families are invited to participate in several face-to-face events across the year, including:

  • In-School Visits (week-long learning opportunities in Kalgoorlie)
  • School Camps designed to enhance learning, social connections, and personal growth
  • Online Incursions

These experiences are designed to enrich our students’ education, build community, and foster a sense of belonging.

Our Curriculum

At Kalgoorlie School of the Air, we deliver the Western Australian curriculum through a flexible and responsive distance education model. Our programs are designed to engage students from Kindergarten to Year 6, catering to a wide range of learning needs and home environments.

Learning materials are delivered each term via post and digital platforms, supported by regular virtual lessons, one-on-one sessions, and whole-school events throughout the year. Our dedicated teachers use evidence-based approaches to ensure students receive a high-quality education regardless of their location.

We provide learning programs across all key learning areas, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
  • The Arts
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Technologies
  • Languages (AUSLAN)

In addition to core subjects, students have access to specialist lessons, enrichment opportunities, and regular incursions and excursions—both virtual and in person—helping to strengthen engagement, creativity, and connection to their peers and teachers.

Our curriculum is tailored to be relevant, inclusive, and achievable for students learning in diverse and often isolated settings. We work closely with families and home tutors to monitor progress, set meaningful goals, and celebrate each student’s individual achievements.
